They get so excited about a topic we are discussing that they talk over each other instead of listening to each other.

Speak quietly... When you're going over lessons and can't hear you, more than likely they'll fail any tests given. After so many of those, they'll realize that you're not going to be their mother and force feed them what they need. Maybe they'll quiet down so they can hear how not to fail the next assignment. GOOD LUCK.

Once you have lost control of a classroom it is very difficult to gain it back. Let them know that you are there to teach and there are those that are there to learn. Tell them that if they lack the desire to learn and display this lack by having private conversations during class time then you can make arrangements for them to spend that time in the principle's office. When you follow through a few times they will get the message, know you mean business, and do the right thing. Though don't expect to win the students teacher of the year award.

Become a more interesting teacher! The only teachers I ever paid attention to in school were great at delivering the material in a creative way. Look at the most well liked and listened to teacher's at the school. One thing they probably have in common is their ability to be creative and present the course material in an interesting way. Good Luck !

I find a bullwhip works well.

Absent of that good classroom management. The teacher has to be in charge instead of the kids. Detention works as a good deterent particularly when the whole class meets after school in detention.

Look for the instigators and send them to the principles office...If it continues kick them out of the class. Show that you mean business and are not a push over.

You cant. The only person I've ever met who is able to consistently do such is my principal-because we respect him and he doesn't stand in front of us enough for us to revert to talking amongst ourselves again.
