Maybe you'd understand better if you asked why, even though there are so many religions, they all have so much in common - rules for living together in harmony, explanation for our existence, explanation for natural phenomena.

Long ago the Mayans had created the first religion soon it was destroyed almost everyone lived in Asia later. Mixing with the few blacks and whites, they thought maybe Mayans were correct then someone made a fake religion which idiots from then believed. People always want to be right and have doubts about other religions, so they create more and more but the newest ones are plain scams so I believe Science since it's not just stories and only take things they know for sure not just guesses.

I think it is because of the infinite creativity of our brains. Human has a tendency to explain everything, including the origin of the universe, the truth about afterlife, the color of our souls...The different explanations to these questions from different groups at different time may be the foundation on which so many religions have be created on the earth.

Because there are so many different kinds of people in so many different kinds of places and times. Think about phones. There are so many different models and different functions and different looks, but that doesn't mean we're just imagining the voice we hear when we use it. God is (many gods are) infinite. The human brain is finite. Why is it surprising that there an infinite number of ways for our finite minds to try and connect with the infinite we can feel with our spirits?

Man knows that there is power greater than himself, that has created the Universe. That Creator is God and he has also created Man. When you consider the many nations and languages , that had not been in communications with each other, and each has a Deity, the question could well be,why are there not more God's and more religions !

In the beginning there was only one true religion. Then Adam, Eve, and Satan rebelled against the true God. That's how thousands of religions came to be. The Bible says that Satan is the god of this world, and that he is deceiving the whole earth. ( 2Corin 4:4; Revelations 12:9)

Because every sociey/culture/tribe has a need to answer the unanswerable questions.
1. Why are we here?
2. How did we get here?
There is no universal religion, so each society makes up their own.

Everyone has freedom of choice when it comes to religion. If you don't like what everyone else is offering, you can set up your own. If you are lucky, some people will follow you. If not, you'll just have a very small congregation.

Because everybody (at the beginning) saw God differently.
For example:
You see a dark blue wall. You say it's dark blue but someone else says it's black.
The Christians saw God as a guy in Heaven punishing the ones that don't listen to him sending them to Hell. And they say they have a forgivable God...
1st law of God:
Don't pray to other Gods. There is only one God, me, Jahve ( something like that).
THERE IS ONLY ONE GOD, so why would we pray to other Gods when there is only one God?
Somebody says:
"That's because we make fake Gods"
No. That's because we are different. We see differently God. HE made us this way. Yes, there is only one God but different interpretations of God.
That's why there are so many religions. How do people chose what religion they will be? By the way how they see God.
"So why does that law exist?"
Because the Christian church wanted money. They wanted to get many, many believers who will (because of the fear of God) pay for forgiving their sins.
P.S.
Dear Christian Church don't sue me because I have freedom of speech just like everybody else.
