restart your computer and reboot it

You do need to run Scan Disk or ERROR CHECKING first and make sure you have tics in BOTH boxes when you scan. This will 'fix' any bad sectors on your hard drive, so then when you Defrag it can get past those bad sectors coz they won't be there anymore. Since it did say Scan Disk, I'm assuming you're running an OS earlier than XP. Make sure your screensaver is set to 'none'. Defrag in Safe Mode too. good luck :-)

i had the exact same problem and all the answers i got on here didn't work, there's a file you need to delete and then run your comp in safe mode to do the scandisk. I found out what to do by going to microsoft.com, there is a faq and troubleshooting section with lots of help and instructions.

Reboot into Safe mode by pressing F8 while the PC is booting.
Run the chkdsk in safe mode

Reboot into normal mode

IF... you are on a network, you may be getting block by design. The administrator will have to do it for you...
