You need two elements, pressurized air and water. I used to be a snowmaker in VT and it is really simple in concept. The snow guns would hook up the water lines that pumped a decent amount of water into the gun, which in turn was blown out through a smaller nozzle so it would spray more than just flow. Add into that the pressurized air and you are set to blow water higher into the air so it can freeze better. The finer the mist, the more powdery the snow. A small set up would need a pretty decent air compressor, that would be my first stop for a home made snow gun.

You either build your own fan out of a car or airplane engine, or you buy a snow making machine.

Another method is using pressurized air, if you can build a tank large enough and attach a big enough compressor.

My brother made his first machine a few years ago and has been updating/perfecting it ever since. The key lies in the compressor, valves and water flow. He can now cover his entire back yard with several inches overnight.

Why make one when you can buy one for the low, low price of $2400.
