I have a 1992 Buick that has always started as soon as I turn the key. Today the past three times I've started it the engine just turns over and over for about 10-15 seconds and then it kicks in and starts. It runs fine once it's started. Why is it acting funny? I also think I smell gas when I get out of it but I'm real paranoid when it comes to things going wrong with my vehicle so that mught be my imagination. What do you think it is and does it sound like something expensive?

Turns out I have a leaky fuel line---after I turn the car off the gas that's in the line leaks out and so the line is empty when trying to start it and it takes that long for the gas to travel from the tank to the engine down the fuel line. Thank you all for your answers thoug---the way this car is I wouldn't be surprised fi these other things went wrong too!

If the engine is a 3.3L V-6, the engine is equipped with a Crank/Cam sensor design called "Quick-Start" from G. M. When the sensor(s) fail, the engine doesn't know what cylinder to fire when. So it will just crank and crank and keep trying to fire the plugs and injectors until it starts. It will display that very behavior.

...and scroll down below the chart, and follow the procedure for retrieving the diagnostic codes. If you get a code "17", "41", "42", or "43" you most likely have a failure there, and you should refer to a repair manual for the location and procedure for replacing the sensor(s).
If you retrieve other code(s), refer to the chart and determine which circuit or system has been identified as a failure or fault and follow the repair manual for the proper diagnostics and repair procedures.
If all this makes you a bit uncomfortable, you may want to take it to a REPUTABLE repair facility displaying the ASE Shingle.
If there are no codes stored, you MAY be looking at a failing fuel pump, regulator, or if you really DO smell fuel, there may be fuel injector o-rings that have begun to leak, and allow fuel pressure to drop.
If you can start the car, and let it idle for a few minutes, shut it off for < 10 seconds, and try to re-start it, if it still starts hard, I'd be looking for codes, as fuel failure is not LIKELY, though possible.

If it is a fast crank, it could be fuel or emission related. Fuel pressure would need t be checked. Are there any warning lights on? A high pitched noise from the fuel pump (inside the tank on most vehicles) could indicate a pump going bad.

Slower cranking could indicate a problem in the charging system. Either way, it needs to go into a shop for proper diagnosis.
