I know nothing about travel in other countries. I want to be safe and I don't know where to start. Should I do a cruise or a tour. Should I back pack across Europe? Any sugestions would be helpful. Thank you.

I travelled in both countries by train with a female friend when we were at uni (backpacking). We had an Interrail (Eurrail) Pass on which we could travel for a month.
We never got bothered once. In Greece we even hitchhiked once! The only other country in Europe I would hitchhike is Ireland. We felt incredibly safe there (I am talking about the Peloponese now, which is a rural area).

Especially the Greek were incredibly nice, but also the Italians. In tourist areas many people speak (some) English, but this is not always the case!

We had a travel guide (Lonely Planet book) with us so that we knew where to go for things like accomodation, but we never pre-booked. There's so many cheap but nice places to stay both in Italy and Greece. Only Rome is incredibly expensive! But so beautiful that it's worth every cent. We mainly stayed in hostels, a great way to meet other travellers.

When we were in the Greek islands the locals often met the ferry and offered us great rooms for low prices (in their own homes! but with the privacy of a hotel).

The food is great both in Greece and Italy and the history of both countries is simply amazing.

I have never been on a cruise or tour there so can't tell you anything about that.

I've travelled extensively in Italy and Greece and I think both are generally very safe countries. As with any country (including the UK) there are areas in some of the larger cities where it is not advisable to go. My recommendation is go with a friend, you'll not get hassled, you'll have someone else who speaks your language, and it will be a lot more fun.

I wouldn't waste your money on a cruise or a tour unless you are not confident enough to do your own thing.

It is very easy to get cheap flights to Rome and Athens or other cities like Venice, Naples, Milan etc (BA have a special offer running now and its worth checking all the budget airlines for prices and availability). Depending on your age and budget, its also pretty easy to get decent enough accommodation at either a youth hostel or at a pre-bookable hotel chain (type Rome hotels or Athens hotels into your search engine).

I find Greek and Italian people to be some of the friendliest and most helpful in Europe especially if you are polite and at least make an effort to speak a little of the language.

We've just come back from a week in Greece and the flights from the UK to Athens and then out to the Dodecanese cost me £130 return. Ferries cost an average of 5 euros per 1 hour trip (double that for speedy hydrofoils or catamarans) and we treated ourselves to a one-night stay in a 4-star hotel which cost us a whole 60 euros for 2 of us B&B.

The links below may be of some help.

Hope you enjoy wherever you go.

Do not worry about safety in Italy and Greece if you do not risk too much. In each country, there are nice and ugly spots, but if you stay with the crowds and watch your belongings, nothing should happen to you. Italy and Greece are marvellous countries with plenty of monuments and pleasant laid-back Mediteranean style. And they are rich, stable, developed West-European countries. In Italy, beware of pickpockets and purse-snatchers. Otherwise, you can fully enjoy it however you wish - with an organized tour or by yourself. Backpacking is a good option. Either way, you will not be alone (there are plenty of backpackers there) and see the best of Europe.

I went to Greece few months ago. It is worth visiting!
You can visit the continental part but also the islands.
I went to a sea side resort near Thesalonikki.
