Unless you agreed to have such items - missing boxes, ruined pizza dough, etc - deducted from your paycheck, it is illegal for an employer to do so. It is the employer's responsibility to exert control and train employees to prevent errors and omissions.

As a businessperson, the employer takes risks for profit or loss. If they want you to assume some of the risk, they should provide some of the profit, above the current compensation.

As far a legal, I don't know, contact your department of labor and speak with a counselor.

It is very unethical for your employer to do this, however. If you are able, find a new job even if it's for a different pizza place.

They would need to have some kind of proof. They certainly can't just take it out of your paycheck without your permission (unless there's some clause for that in any paperwork you signed when you started the job.) Seems more likely they should try to charge you for the box.

You can always tell them that if they want you to pay, they will have to call the cops, but then you'd probably lose your job.

It is not legal to charge for this but also has to be proven and is it part of any employment hire documents you signed acknowledging this charge?

please don't tell me they actually have a business process in place that actually accounts for every box?! this sounds really crazy....how does a box being "missing" (ugh!) determine that you "stole" a pizza...because that is what they are saying...I would fight this....in writing....they may be setting you up to be let go!
