I enjoyed reading the book, even after I knew about the Oprah incident. The way that documents are recorded for police records can sometimes vary from the way people experienced them. The way that Mr. Frey perceived what was happening to him is certainly going to be more powerful than the records at city hall. I don't think there is any doubt that struggling with addiction was a difficult thing for him and probably very traumatic. There are probably some embellishments to make the story more interesting but I don't feel that he blatantly lied.
