By default (unchanged by most hosting companies), PHP allocates up to 8 MB of memory per script (memory_limit directive in php.ini) and has a 2 MB limit on file uploads (upload_max_filesize directive in php.ini). Pictures taken by modern digital cameras can be much larger than 2 MB, so you wouldn't be able to upload them, unless you increase upload_max_filesize. If you do, they will require resizing, which in turn may require more than 8 MB of memory.

What this means for you is that you may have to host this application on a dedicated server, and those usually start at about $200/month...
