Speaking as a nurse, ace wrap it for support, keep it elevated as much as possible, and ice it for 20 minutes of every hour for the first 24-48 hours. No, you don't have to wake up to ice it when you are sleeping--just ice during waking hours. After 48 hours apply warm compresses to bring blood to the area and promote healing. If its not responding and the pain is getting worse, get thee to a hospital for an x-ray to be sure you didn't fracture anything. Also, when ace-wrapping, wrap firmly, but not so tight you cut off the circulation. Your toes should remain warm! You can also take Ibuprofen for the pain, and its anti-inflammatory effect with help with healing as well. Try to keep your weight off it while its healing, and be careful not to fall and injure your other leg!

Hi well is it a sprain ? Have you been to your gp about it ? Sprains can just be as painful as a fracture. If it is a sprain you need to rest it,put ice on the ankle but not directly on the skin, wrap the ice in a towel or tea towel or a pck off peas, check for the circulation make sure you toes are not blue and elevate when possible higher then your heart.Dont wear tight shoes as this will agravate even more.If you have a pr off crutches or can borrow some i would use them for a wk or so,this will help you not to put full weight on that ankle. The sprain should start to feel better in 1wk to 10 days al according how bad the sprain is.If it isnt go bck to your gp he may prescribe you with ani-inflammatry tablets this will help with the swelling and the pain.Dont forget to take regular pain killers .Good Luck

Good old remedy. soak your ankle in warm salt water for 15 minutes. Dry and apply any anti inflammatory balm and bandage it. Rest your feet. Do not put pressure on to it.Have pain killer every 4 hours. If your feel the ankle swollen then you must go to hospital for x-ray to see for any fractures.

RICE it
Rest ~~~~~~~~~stay off of it
Ice~~~~~~~~~ice packs 20 minutes on 20 minutes off
Compress~~~~use an elastic bandage (ACE wrap) to apply GENTLE pressure to it
Elevation~~~~~keep it raised as high as possible as long as possible to minimize swelling and pain
Use this for 24 - 48 hours before switching to alternating hot and cold packs for pain and swelling. Good luck
