How about a "share" of a camera? Maybe your family would be willing to delay your birthday gift, and combine it with a camera at Christmas (if you do that kind of Christmas). And maybe it could be a present from everyone, not just one person. Or maybe you could come up with matching funds (ie: they pay for half, and you pay for half).

Also, see if you can find a good used one.

Another good tactic is to figure out why you want one. If you can push it as educational (learning about composition and color) or maybe even figure out a way to make money from it, they might be more willing to buy it for you. Or even co-sign a loan for you, and you pay it back with babysitting money (or portrait fees!).

I remember when I was a freshman, I wanted a flute so baad so I could play with my friends in band (I wanted to do music, too). My parents co-signed a loan, and my band teacher helped me find a used one. I paid it back with part-time job money. So the moral is: don't give up!

(The extra-happy bonus: I stuck with the lessons, and my parents gave me back the money I paid for the flute after I paid off the loan. I had no idea they were going to do that.)

If there's a will, there's a way. Maybe there are other things you want more than a digital camera.

A pet!!! A nice cute kitten only cost 100 at the pet store. If buy from breeders then it's way cheaper.

Tell your parents that this kitten will teach you responsibility and how to care for other things than yourself.

AND THEN NAME YOUR KITTY HIPPO !!!!!!! (just to confuse people) =)

You would like a new "G" purse from Macy*s.

Also a hot air balloon ride.

And some Bubbleicious gum in grape flavor.

This I decree!
