We used to joke about this in law school. A students become professors; B students become judges and C students become rich......LOL
Seriously, though, judges are paid a salary. Lawyers' income has no restraints. The richest lawyer is going to make more money than the highest paid judge. However, a federal judge is appointed for life and he or she will make more money than the average attorney. This is not a simple question.

the bankruptcy code (or rules?) require the judge to approve all fees charged to debtors by lawyers in a bankruptcy case. the judge can, and will, reduce fees to lawyers that don't follow the rules. Usually it is not done on the first mistake, and when it is done, it is usually designed to force a lawyer to either learn and comply with the rules and code, or quit taking bankruptcy cases. No matter how hard the attorney worked and tried, if the work does not comply with the law, the client didn't get what he paid for.

both go hand in hand --lawyer become judges.. but judges still lawyers..
one hand feeds the other...
lawyers will make more money in terms of salary but judges wield the power...
retired judges normally go back into private practice...

Depends on what type of lawyer:
Public defenders and entry level assistant district attorneys make much less than judges.
Top criminal defense, family law (divorce), corporate, and tort law / personal injury (asbestos, cigarette, etc) lawyers make much more than judges.
