Words would be really hard to read if all the letters were on top of each other.
The ancient Egyptians have a pictorial (hieroglyphic) system of writing. The Chinese and Japanese characters originally developed from a pictorial type of writing.
European... alphabet type of writing may go back to the Greeks, Romans or Arabic languages.
