The Torah (a.k.a. the Pentateuch) is the first 5 books of the Old Testament: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. Moses received these books through the divine inspiration of God. This was important to the beginning of Judaism b/c it WAS THE BEGINNING OF JUDAISM! The entire religion is based on the scriptures of these five books. It talks about how they were to make sacrifices, dress, act, marry, carry out civil justice, etc. It was essentially their religious guideline and their law book. This is how the whole thing began.
