the wheel cylinder is a slave cylinder in a drum brake system it pushes both the leading and the trailing shoes out against the brake drum because it is two pistons in one casing the seals leak overtime usually run between 7 and 20 bucks to buy not expensive but very important little part. drum brakes today are usually on rear wheels only, not since the mid 70's has a car had drum brakes in the front hope this helps if one is bad u replace both recommmend u do ASAP

you have one at each rear wheel, it activates that brake,when you push the brake pedal the master cylinder sends fluid to the slave (wheel) cylinders,out back and more fluid to the callipers (front slaves on disc brake systems) ,hope this helps

when you push your petal your wheel clyinder pushes its pistons out witch pushes your brake shoes out to push against brake drum to slow down your vehicle
