A psychiatrist is a medical doctor with a specialty focused on the mind, they do talk therapy and can prescribe medication.
A psychologist is a counselor that does talk therapy. No medical training. If you want to be s psychiatrist you would have to go to medical school, a psychologist you would have to go to college and get your masters as unless you have your masters most insurance companies won't pay for your services.

Not all that much, a psychiatrist is a medical doctor who has gone through medical school like any other medical doctor, but concentrated in psychological issues, rather than say, surgical techniques, or emergency medicine. Because they are a medical doctor they can dispense prescritions. A psychologist on the other hand has a doctoral degree (not an MD) however they are not a medical doctor therefore they cant dispense medication. So to make a short answer very long (sorry!) psychiatry is a branch of medicine where psychology is the study of human behavior.

Psychiatrists are the most well known of mental health professionals. They are MEDICAL DOCTORS, one of the few professionals in the mental health industry who specialize and are certified in treating mental illness using the biomedical approach to mental disorders including the use of medications. Psychiatrists may also go through significant training to conduct psychotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapy; however psychologists and clinical psychologists specialize in the research and clinical application of these techniques. The amount of training a psychiatrist holds in providing these types of therapies varies from program to program and also differs greatly based upon region.

Psychology is an academic and applied field involving the study of the human mind, brain, and behavior. Psychology also refers to the application of such knowledge to various spheres of human activity, including problems of individuals' daily lives and the treatment of mental illness.

Psychiatrists can prescribe medications, whereas psychologists can not. Psychologist just have a Master's or PHD. Psychiatrist has a medical degree. Both can do psychoanalysis. And psychotherapy. I surmise that you want to be a psychologist. Basically, all the courses required should be those that deal with psychology, e;g; child psychology, Erickson's developmental stages of the individuals, etc. Why don't you go to a professor who teaches general psychology.?

Psychiatry: The branch of medicine concerned with the study and treatment of mental illness, emotional disturbance, and abnormal behaviour.
Psychology: The scientific study of the human mind and its functions especially those affecting behaviour in a given context. The mental factors governing a situation or activity. They are very subtle differences, but psychiatry is mainly from a medical point of view; and psychology is from a scientific stance. Hope this helps you! :o)

The question sounds like the setup for a joke, but it’s an important difference to understand, whether you are a student of psychology or a consumer searching for a mental health provider. The terms ‘psychologist’ and ‘psychiatrist’ are often used interchangeably to describe anyone who provides therapy services. While psychologists and psychiatrists both conduct psychotherapy and research, there are significant differences between the two professions.

Either way you will need to do your undergrad (first four years of college) work in psychology, then after four years you can decide which branch to pursue. I woudln't worry too much about it yet. The more you study, the more about each branch you'll understand, and eventually you'll figure out which one interests you more.
