The answer is in the title song and the phrase "why do only fools and horses work?" based on the premise that the Trotters aren't earning a living the conventional way.

John Sullivan wrote Citizen Kane before writing Only Fools and Horses - the very first episode he wrote for it was called 'Only Fools and Horses', he liked the name so much this is why he used it when writing his next sitcom. It has nothing to do with the song as the song was written after the sitcom was named. If your son is that big a fan they have an official Only Fools and Horses book which has absolutely everything about the show in it and is a good read for fans. Nicholas Lyndhurst also starred in Citizen Kane and this is why John picked him for the role of Rodney and the original Del Boy was going to be played by the man who plays Slater. David Jason was originally considered too young by John even though he played the '100 year old gardener' in another sitcom and was already huge in Open All Hours, they didn't think he would pull off the role!

The line is from an old EastEnd of London song, performed by Chas & Dave, that states that 'only fools and horses work', and expresses the fact that the Trotters do not 'work' in the traditional fashion for a living, they scam.

Because I think John Sullivan the writer wanted to point out that the characters were a bunch of fools and like horses they work hard but don't get much success. Mind horses do get better success. :D Sorry don't really no :(

Old English song line "Only fools and horses work" (it's in the title song, by the way). Del and Rodney don't work if they can help it - just do a bit of 'ducking and diving'!!
