No. Everything is different by state and county. I just went through this whole ordeal with my boyfriend and his daughter. Just make your way to the court house and ask them for papers that you can fill out. They will charge you a filing fee and a court cost. The only reason I would say get a lawyer if you have had problems or been in trouble in the past where the courts would not want your child to be in a bad situation. Lawyers are good to work their way around the laws, they know the loop wholes. A lawyer can be spend, but there are cheaper ones out there.

If you're a man then the mother of your child should be grateful that you want to be a part of your childs life. With that being said unless the other party is concerned about alcohol use, drug use or other dangerous behavior I don't see a need for you to have a lawyer but you can ask the Court to appoint a Law Guardian for your child. They only care about the best interest of kids not with anything else.
