Why doesn't everyone vote?

The problem is that there are not enough people voting Independent...and the problem is also with a lot of polls. They often only list the top candidates or the top two parties. I wish everyone would vote independent, but too many people are afraid of true change and will continue with the two party system. If and until we get a system of government closer to the Aussie system where the elected officials are determined by percentages, instead of our electoral college, things will never change. Both Dems and Reps want to keep the current system of voting because it benefits them.

The poster above me had a great answer.

I know some of the 3rd party candidates running. They are honest and visionary people of the people; however, I cannot afford to vote for them on the chance it will help the reps.

Most independents split the democratic party rather than the rep as the democrats are fed up with their party and want better, while the reps love their party no matter what it does to the country and world, so they don't create many 3rd parties to water down their vote.

If there was a way to actually get the majority of Americans to do this AND (and this is important) have real voting that actually counts like hand counted at the precinct paper ballots that is totally transparent and difficult to rig, then I would say yes...
then many people would do it perhaps as most Americans are fed up.

In the meanwhile do the following:

1. try to get instant runoff voting (essentially voting 1str, 2nd, 3rd..you can vote your first choice (3rd party) without hurting your 2nd choice (dems) and helping your last choice (reps)..that would enable us to see how much support third party candidates really had as people would not be afraid to vote them and thus help the enemy.

2. Get involved with voting rights group doing citizens parallel elections to double check the vote (see banvotingmachines.org).

3. Be a poll watcher and videotape problems and help (Conyers
4. contact all the representatives in congress you can and ask them to cosign and support HB 6200 (just introduced 2 weeks ago) that if passed would make all future presidential elections be held on paper ballots hand counted at the precinct in full transparent view and also posted there. The bill has 19 cosigners and if we could flood congress and get it passed before 2008, maybe the people could chose the president like we are supposed to...maybe eventually they will add amendments to make other high offices on paper hand counted. This will do more than voting third party.

5. Join in big protests like the www.worldcantwait and www.troopsoutnow, etc. Gather people and protest a few times a a month locally.

6. put the name of good websites that informed people about vote fraud etc on duct tape and stick everywhere (a few good ones are freepress.org and fairnessbybeckerman.org and blackboxvoting.org)..write it on the money or write no vote fraud to remind people. Put the duct tape with messages everywhere [people are..bus stops, Dr's. offices, gas station bathrooms, car washes, bathrooms in grocery and dept stores and on shopping carts, on walls/tables at fast food restaurants or by drive trough's, etc. Put the website on [poster board and put in your car window..I have had one that say "Ohio vote fraud-freepress.org) on my car 2 years and I see people reading it all the time..it's about 6 inches high and 2 feet across. Put signs in your lawn. Freeway blog and find out calendars in your cities that list local progressive events--get involved in areas of interests and make connections and recommends big get togethers to brainstorm and make friends..

7. write newspapers often about vote fraud and other political issues

7. Our money is our one remaining power..they do want it and care how we spend it.

Since it is now a country of, for, and by the corporations and since corporations are exporting our jobs, polluting our environment, running our propagandized news conglomerates, and corrupting and bribing our executive and legislative branches of government, we must hurt them the only place they care about which is the bottom line.

Reduce your gas, buy food from local framers and coops, buy organic, recycle, stop buying cable, live simply, reduce consumption and stocks, etc...if we all did it, it would be noticed and maybe force some change...

Because we're conditioned to believe voting for anyone who isnt Democrat Or Republican is "throwing away your vote". Democrats and Republicans are bought and owned by the same global corporate interests. Its just two sides of the same coin. These guys are playing multi-level 3D chess, while most of us are playing checkers...they both vote for expanding the American Empire...Big Government...more spending..wide open borders...More controlling laws...Tourching the Constitution...Breaking us into little bickering groups of Left Vs Right...Republican Vs Democrat...Black Vs White...Islam Vs Christianity etc. Instead of having us united as Americans. That would be a real threat to them. Just look around

Yes! I totally agree that the incumbents and the two parties need to take a hike. I am ready to go on a mission to spread the word that the democratic/republican parties are only interested in playing politics and not interested in meeting the needs of or protecting the best interest of the American people.

There is too much hatred, politically, for a possibility of everyone voting independent. Plus people who are political through and through just do not have the common mind sensability.

Because voting independent is stupid. It takes votes away from the democrats and enables the republicans to win, enabling the great darkness that plagues are country to continue marching forward unabated.

Of course, voting republican would be even stupider, but independents now are generally disgruntled republicans who need to embrace the reality that is their party and move to stop them. That's the only message Congress would ever heed!

I will not vote independent because after watching the House votes on C-Span, independents tend to lean more toward the left.

Are you suggesting the American public pull a Brewster's Millions and vote for None of the Above? Then what? Once you've "stuck it to the man," then what?

But you need that concerted effort; otherwise, the two major parties are willing to give up that 3 to 12% to alternate candidates

Because some people like to be led around like dogs on leashes. God forbid they think for themselves.
