The definition of a weed is a plant growing out of its place. A rose in the middle of a cornfield would be a weed. Now if you find that crabgrass is not growing where you would like it to be growing then it is a weed. To control this plant, can be done two different ways. If it is in an existing turfgrass stand, then depending upon the grass you can use a preemergent. This obviously would only work on next year's seeds. If you are in an area which will or recently has frosted then the plant is dead. Seeding and fertilizing existing turf is always the best way to reduce weeds. You could also spray a post emergence herbicide but they are not as effective and can damage the existing turf much more readily.

Crabgrass will die in the winter because it's an annual unless you don't have a winter. If you don't have winter use MSMA Crabgrass Killer, available at L&G Centers. Roundup will kill the good grass too and 245t and 245d are broadleaf weed killers and will have no effect on crabgrass.

In the spring you can put down a crabgrass preventer with your first fertilization. Scotts makes a good one but there are others. Your L&G Tech can help.

Crabgrass is an annual weed. Apply a pre-emergent herbicide in spring (when the daffodills are blooming). Roundup will also kill it but it will kill the good grass too, use with causion.

Roundup is correct. What most people do is spray in early spring after it come up. It may turn grass brown for awhile but it will come back. Crabgrass has to seed to come back, so, you have to spray it before it go to seed, or, you just waste your time. They do make a fertilizer with a killer in it too, but, Roundup is good stuff. Spray when no rain in sight, if, it rain after you spray you wasted your time and Roundup.

You have to use a crab grass killer which will not kill your existing grass, and then you have to you a preveter so it does not come back...Then when it is all going next year, you have to air rate you grass, plant new seed, water all summer, feterlize, and make sure it does not come back, put more of the prefenter on the lawn.
It is not considered a weed, becasue the dfinition is different...
good luck

CAUTION: Careful when using Roundup. It's a carcinogin. Wear gloves because not only can you inhale it, the poison can enter your body through the skin. I have used it in desperation only on days when there is no wind or breeze, or animals or people around.
