Maria Antonia Josefa Johanna von Habsburg-Lothringen (November 2, 1755 – October 16, 1793), known to history as Marie Antoinette was born an Archduchess of Austria, and later became Queen of France. She was the daughter of the Holy Roman Emperor Francis I and Maria Theresa of Austria. She was married to Louis XVI of France at age 14, and was the mother of "lost dauphin" Louis XVII. Marie Antoinette is perhaps best remembered for her legendary (and, some modern historians say, exaggerated) excesses, and for her death: she was executed by guillotine at the height of the French Revolution in 1793, for the crime of treason.

Marie Antoinette was the last queen of France to Louis XVI, and giving birth to Louis XVII, who never reigned. Marie Antoinette was born as the princess of Francis I and Maria Theresa of the Holy Roman Empire in Vienna, in present day Austria. She was to be made the Queen of France to create an alliance between the European countries. She married the dauphin in 1770, who then became king in 1774. Marie Antoinette never loved Louis XVI and was often critisized by the French people for her extravagant lifestyle during French disorder and rumors that she was having an affair. The king, however, was confirmed to have an affair with Comtesse de la Motte, later to be known as the Affair of the Diamond Neckalce. This made the French public even more upset with the monarchy, and started the countdown to the Revolution. The son of the couple, the Dauphin, died on July the 4th in 1789. Rumors began to circulate that Marie Antoinette poisoned him. On the 14th, a mob of French peasants reached the Bastille. This became the national Republic holiday of Bastille Day, a major mark in which it fell, which marked the Revolution. On October the 5th, the Versailles (the French the summer palace) was stormed and the king, the queen, and their 2 remaining children were captured. They were sent to the dilapidated Tuileries Palace for imprisonment and trial. Louis XVI was sentenced to death on December 11, 1792, and executed on January 17, 1793. On August 2, she was made Prisoner no. 280. On October 14, she was put on trial. On the 15th, she was sentenced to death. At 12:15 on the 16th, in Paris, she was executed by guillotine. Her last reported words were, "Monsieur, I ask your pardon. I did not do it on purpose," when she accidentaly stepped on the executioner's foot. As for her personallity, she was considered weak, and self-centered. She made no real contributions, but starting the French Revolution.

All the above answers are very informative and accurate, but also she is credited with the invention of Marmalade by some authorities on the subject. When she was feeling ill (French word - malade) and unable to face food the only thing she could stomach was a conserve made from bitter oranges and those who made it nicknamed it "Marie Malade" which was later shortened to marmalade.
