It is the thrill that we are seeking. But there are some movies where I have come to think "Why the hell did I come to see this movie! Why am I torturing myself like this?" Some are that terrifying.
Not necessarily gore & blood. There are many scary/horror movies that will scare the living daylights out of you without showing you any blood at all.

My boyfriend is OBSESSED with horror movies, and he got his cousins into them as well. They like the rush and the suspense more than anything I think. My bf has the whole "Halloween" collection with the Michael Myers character, white mask, crazy brown hair, etc from the 70's, and since I was three I have been so afraid of him I cant help but scream and cry when I am around a mask of himor his movies or theme songs. People like that rush, like going on roller coasters, and I am one that can handle certain horror films, but I do have my limits on what i will watch and what i will not be a part of.

Some violent and graphic horror movies actually drive people into doing something bad. However, the good side of horror movies are once you get used to those bad scene. When reality comes, they will not be scared as much.
It is like getting a flu shot. Some will get sick from it and still want to do it.
However, the mind set of watching horror movie is escape from reality.

It is the rush of excitement of seeing something you would not normally encounter. It is pure escapism in a safe environment and getting into the movie with the people seated around you..hearing us all catch our breaths at the same time and then laugh at our reaction. It is the marvel of movie magic and how realistic a gag can look and yes..an inate blood-lust to be able to sit still and watch what is thrown at you. I always go out with an exhilerated feeling by being part of the audience.
