I just bought a domain name and I was curious how long it takes to register? I did a search for it and it is showing up as still available and I want to start working on it.

I have registered quite a few domain names and they usually take 5 to 10 minutes for the registration to get done.

How soon a domain name will be registered depends on 3 things:

1. How soon your chosen domain provider processes the order and registration.

2. How soon they submit a copy of it to the authoritative database holder (Registry) for that extension (e.g. Verisign for .com domain names).

3. How soon the "Registry" processes the information and notifies the domain provider it's done.

It can take anywhere from a few minutes up to 24 hours max.

If its still available then your domain is not yet activated. Try to login to your domain control panel and see the status of your domain, if its booked through yahoo it generally takes 30 min to one hour to get it activated.
