when my laptop is on the charger doesn't work but the second i turn the computer off the charger works what could be wrong with it. i know its not the charger. i have a hp zv 5000 if that helps any

its not the charger i bought a new charger and it wasn't that. and sometimes it will work on the charger when its runing but its really picky when it does that. and it runs on the battery when it is turned on

try another charger if its work,change the charger if the result is the same you have problem in laptop power supply system,you did not mention if its working on the back up battery.

Is it in warranty?
Anyways, try running the laptop for 3 to 4 hours with the charger connected. If the laptop hibernates due to low battery then we need to try another charger (if the issue is not resolved then the laptop needs to be repaired).

I don't know if your laptop is meant to charge when its on... it may just run off of that power but not charge... and then when its off it charges. It depends on your laptop... if it isn't supposed to work like that on your laptop... i'd suggest contacting hp and see what they have to say about it.
