Hello, can I feed my new male hamster treats through the bars like fruit and those animal choclate drops which I have. :)
He has food in his dish but I would like to know. Thank you in advance.

Just had him today you see, his name is Timmy. :) I had a starter kit that contained everything plus these special hamster chocolate treats.
I don't want to give him to many though. I just asked because I don't want him to pick up a regular biting habit.

I tried him the treats through the bars and kept it to a minimum of 5 as one user said and he took it off me gently. They are really small chocolate drops so I was very cautious but he took it nicely.
Thanks everybody, I would give you all postive votes if I could but need to get to level 2 first. :D

yea i fed my hamsters those chocolate drops through the bars. feed him no more than 5 a day. and it's good for them to bite the bars it keeps there teeth down. mine used to do it everynight it kept me awake. and with the fruit if it's fresh don't let him burry it in his nest. hamsters are horders and he'll end up with rotten food in his cage wich you don't want as it can lead to wet tail. a symptom of that is a wet tail and if it is wet just bring them to the vets. a way to prvent them from getting wet tail is by keeping there cage clean. enjoy your little bundle of fluff.

No.I have done the same mistake with my other hamster and he just keeps on chewing on the bars , now you might think it's good and trims their teeth down well NO my hamster chipped half of his tooth because of chewing on the bars.Wire is not wood the hamsters can't brake it down. Also it creates lots of noise at night.

Yes it's completely normal to do that. I actually use the bars as a holder to stick a piece of carrot through for my hamster to chew on. Treats don't have to be put in the dish, just remember if a pet is given a fresh veggie or fruit piece to remove any leftovers. You do not want rotting food in the cage with your pet, it's not healthy for them.

You do buy special hamster treats from the pet shop. Just watch your fingers - they can have very sharp teeth. Give your hamster a wee treat and let him out for a run about.

Yes you can, it might take a while for him to get the hang of it though. Another thing I used to do with my hamsters was wedge treats threw the bars like carrot slices, cucumbers, celery etc. They love it.

Yes you can and the love apples but i wouldn't give it to many treats. They store the food in the side of the mouth, he could end up with bad teeth. Say welcome to Timmy for me. and a happy long life to him good luck

You can feed him through the bars, but since you just got him, you may want to create an owner/hamster bond. I feed all of my hamsters by hand, and, as far as I know, they all love me! I breed hamsters, and it takes awhile to feed them all by hand, but it's worth it. It's way more fun to feed them by hand, anyway.
