Is it safe to eat fish if you're trying to conceive, pregnant, or nursing? Get the facts from a trusted OB-GYN.
According to the FDA, nursing mothers, pregnant women, women of childbearing age, and young children should not eat shark, swordfish, king mackerel, and titlefish, which may contain high levels of methyl mercury, harmful to the developing nervous system.
Mercury gets into the fish's system from atmospheric pollution mixing with salt water. Since seafood is important for things like iodine, it is recommended that those at risk eat 12 ounces per week of other types of cooked fish.

Some Should Watch Fish Intake
Mercury in fish can harm kids, pregnant women
(HealthDay News) -- Fish, notably types high in omega-3 fatty acids like salmon and albacore tuna, are recommended as part of a healthy diet.
But those fish also tend to harbor small amounts of the element mercury, which may be harmful to young children and women who are pregnant or may become pregnant.
Here are guidelines from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on how much fish is safe to eat for children and pregnant women:
Shark, swordfish, king mackerel and tilefish are particularly high in mercury, so avoid eating those fish at all.
Limit your diet to two meals per week of other fish.
Stick to shrimp, light tuna in a can (not albacore or white tuna), salmon, pollock or catfish, all of which are lower in mercury than other kinds of fish.
Avoid eating local fresh catch unless information is available on the safety of local fish.

OK to have shrimp, scallops, crab, tilapia, haddock (Atlantic) and cod. They still recommend eating fish and seafood only 2 times per week or so.
DON'T eat tuna fish, King Mackerel, Tilefish, swordfish, and shark because of the methylmercury content, which can damage your developing baby's brain.
It doesn't matter how long you cook the fish, because you cannot cook methylmercury, an environmental contaminant, out of fish!

I think most of it is okay to eat, as long as it's properly stored and fully cooked. But it's been a few years since I was pregnant.
Shellfish, I think, can be a different story. I'm wanting to say shellfish has a higher possibility of having some bacteria enter it.
All that said, I ate all kinds of seafood when I was pregnant, and have two wild and crazy boys now, just fine.
EDIT: Okay. It never occurred to me to eat any of the "bad" fishies, 'cept maybe tuna. But that's not likely.
