He needs to see a doctor, probably copd or asthma. Does he smoke? Encourage him to quit! Of course if it sounds like he is coughing up a lung, it may be too late for him. Could be an albuterol inhaler would solve his problem.

Sue...is that you?? LOL. This sounds JUST like MY boss. He constantly clears his throat and then gets into these coughing fits where he gags and dry heaves over and over again. I have told him several times, if he can't stop doing that, then he should go home. The whole building can hear him.

If he does smoke it is his lungs trying to tell him he needs to quit so I wouldn't worry to much about it being contagious. But you need to encourage him to see a doctor whether he smokes or not. Tell him he needs to see about it, not only for his sake but for the sake of others around him. I know that some people hate to go to the doctor but maybe if you put it to him like that, maybe he will go for the sake of everyone. Best of luck for both of you!!

Perhaps he is trying to attract attention?

Make sure you tell everyone to drop everything and give him their undivided attention from now on if he even so much as splutters.

Well it's possible.....
