I would say no, but you need to look at your contract of employment, but your first port of call should be to your union. I've heard of this before, and the employer was a large american owned supermarket chain? Bit of a low & nasty trick if valid, certanaly would be looking for another job if it were me.

You are not getting paid in cash but you are benefiting by getting qualifications on completion of the course. These courses are not free and are paid for by your employer. so show some gratitude

No it's not right. If the courses are mandatory and will cost you your job if you don't attend then you need to be paid or compensated.

Not if you are not getting paid. They either need to pay you or offer you time off from regular business hours. I would leave or report them to the Dept. of Labor in your state.

Check your employment contract. If there's nothing specifying that you have to make yourself available for training as required then speak to your boss and suggest overtime or payment for unsocial hours.

Training should always take place within your contracted hours.

Time to change jobs.

They have zero right to make the courses mandatory and not pay you. If it is mandatory, then they have to pay you.
