My harddrive I have is a Gateway that I bought refurbished for $100 at Computers, Etc. Everything works fine on it but it is VERY SLOW, I mean VERY S L O W! I want to buy a new harddrive or a laptop/desktop. I know nothing about brands, systems, etc. These are all foreign words to me. When I go into a store I am so lost with the saleclerk & I don't want to be taken.

I want a computer for internet access, fast performing, typing letters, homework, making cards & other projects. My son is 11 & he is starting to have to type his book reports. Our's is so slow that sometimes we go to the library to use theirs.

What type, model, brand name, do you suggest? I am looking to spend under $600 (if that's possible). I have a mouse, keyboard, monitor, printer & speakers. I just need a new harddrive or do you suggest a laptop? Please give me specifics so I can write it all down so it sounds like I have some knowledge when I am at the stores. Thanks! Any websites that I can learn from?

Dell computers are great. I have Compaque, Sony, and Dell...Dell is better than both in several aspects. Go to Dell website, they have excellent value for money.

Having a large harddisc drive doesnt solve the whole problem. You need to consider the RAM size, and the processing speed of the computer. A pc with a processor speed of 1gigahertz, Ram size of 256mb or higher and a hard disk space of maybe 20gigabytes will be ok for u. Brands dont really matter but if u want one, I'd vouch for a Toshiba Satellite Laptop. I think that will serve you well. I am not sure of the price though.

For your purpose it is not the hard drive that will make your computer faster it is the processor and the ram. Anyway, I don't recommend the laptop, because having a kid around them is not always wise my nephew spilt a glass of milk on my brother-in-laws while it was in his lap! with a desktop if they spill it only ruins the keyboard.

Anyway, get a barebones system that has just the basics needed for word processing since that is all that you need. Below I have enclosed links to a few actual computers located at the best places for good prices on computers. I recommend you buy online, Stores just don't have as many options and frequently sales man get commission, not to mention the prices are higher and you have to pay sales taxes.

Next website (most recommended) I buy here:
http://www.newegg.com/ProductSort/SubCategory.asp?SubCategory=10
At newegg you can select the options and/or price range that you are looking for to narrow down selection.
I recommend you to stay away from dell and emachines, and recommend copaQ/HewlittPackard, acer, or toshiba.

Hope this helps

Hi,

I can easily understand your knowledge about computers when you says Hard Drive when you mean the actual CPU.
Anyways for $600 you can get many good computers which can fulfill your requirement, however it is important to know what computer you have and if there is a way to make it work efficiently so that we can spare a major part of $600 you are ready to spend.
in future you may need this money to buy your son a laptop for his further education.

all manufacturers have a certian ammount of bad computers comming off the assembly line usaly 1 in 8 has a problem
so name brand dosnt mean a thing
what you should look for a duo cor or 64 bit processor
at least 512 mb ram i recomend a gig if its certified vista capable thats good also look at warranty you should get at least a 2 year
and find out how it works do you have to call someone who dosnt speak english wait on hold half an hour just to have them walk you thru some things then box it up and ship it off wait 4 weeks unpack it just to find all your files are gone or can you just take it back to the store and get it back in a few days
plan on spending 800-1200 on a decent mid range system

Definitely upload extra reminiscence except it is already obtained the highest potential of reminiscence it might probably preserve. RAM is way quicker than digital reminiscence on a mechanical tough force due to the fact that studying and writing to the disk is slower. But as others are announcing, should you pc is eight years historic, you could remember getting a brand new pc quickly due to the fact that except you've got upgraded your CPU, you are going for walks on a pc with a gradual processor or even the most affordable funds pc you get at present will probably be quicker.

A hard drive probably will not help you. The cpu determines the speed of processing. More ram is a temporary fix, but I suspect your cpu is 500 mhz or less. If that is the case, I can help you install linux if you email me in a few days. On the way home from Greece.
