If all that you want to do is to scan just one picture, maybe you can do it in a library, Staples, Office Max (or one of those places). After all, there is point of buying a scanner if you just want to scan a picture and probably won't ever use it again.

There are two kind of scanner, flatbed and the non-flatbed. A flatbed scanner looks very much like a xerox copier. A non-flatbed scanner looks very much like a printer. If you want to scan a picture, the flat-bed kind is what you need. After the scanner has scanned a picture, instead of printing it out to paper (like a normal xerox copier would), it would save to a file digitally. And then you save this file to your diskette.

Is the picture on a digital camera or a loose picture? If it's on a digital camera, u should be able to plug it in the computer and download that picture onto the computer.

If it's just a picture u found laying around, you will need to purchase a scanner or use a friends or something. The scanner is plugged into the computer. Then you put the picture onto the scanner and follow the prompts to scan the picture onto the computer. It may be hard the first time you do it, but it gets easier. Just follow what the computer tells you to do.

A scanner is something EXTERNAL to your Computer. Most scanners these days are flat bed type that will accept an A4 (or Letter) sized piece of paper. A scan head is then passed over the document and the contents of the piece of paper (or whatever you are scanning) is converted to a digital image. There are other types of scanner, some are hand held and are manually pased over the document to be scanned. There are also different sizes of scanner (larger or smaller than A4/Letter).

Examples and a description of image scanners can be found here:

Hope this helps

a scanner is similiar to a copy machine. it will hook up to your computer and allow you to scan a picture or file and scan it into an electronic form. The scanner will most likely have a lid that you can open and close. Under this lid, there will be a piece of glass that you can place your picture on to scan.

Scanner is a hardware through which you scan pictures and it is not in your computer. It comes separately and you have to buy it along with your computer.
