Just been listening to Elton John Greatest Hits 1970-2000 and can't make up my mind wether I prefer his old stuff or new-ish stuff. He is talented and everything he does seems to turn to gold!

As much as I love his old stuff, I have to say the reason I bought the greatest hits album was because of the more recent stuff. Songs like "This train don't stop there" and "I want love" are classics in their own right. The first disc of the greatest hits album is very good, but I must say that I do somewhat prefer the second disc. It is under-rated songs like "The one" and "Believe" that really make the second disc my favourite. Coincidentally I believe (see what I did there) these are more his in-the-middle hits, so just to be awkward, I'll say I prefer his old, but not that old hits!

I totally agree the "Older" stuff is better!! Maybe I'm prejudiced because Igrew up during the 60's and was in high school in the late 70's so his music was part of my growing up! It's funny how just hearing an old familiar song can generate a flood of memories. ie: That's the first song I ever asked a girl to dance to in Intermediate School. That song was my senior prom theme song! The first time I ever "made out" with a girl, that song was playing on the radio! When I broke up with my girlfriend, I used to listen to that song over and over! Music is such a powerful medium! Elton John was a big part of my Life's experiences and growing up!!!! So Yeah!! The older stuff IS better!! Goodbye Yellow Brick Road Don't let the sun go down on me and more.....

Yes, he is a very talented man...but also a very ego-centric man.

Personally, I love the early stuff, specifically everything from "Madman Across The Water" through "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy".

A lot of his best stuff has to acknowledge the fact that Bernie Taupin handled the lyrics (and he is a master word-smith).
And lots of credit to the band, bassist Dee Murray, drummer Nigel Olsson and Davey Johnstone on guitar and backing vocals.

The 70s stuff. I like it all but his stuff from the early to late 70s was the best. I met him in 1971. I was 14 years old and it was his first tour in the US. He was the nicest person.

I prefer the older stuff (1965 - 1990), but not just the hits, some of the b-sides are top notch! But my fave is "Crocodile Rock"!
