It really depends on what you need it to do. I have an eMachines and my husband has an HP. Check the memory for sure and if you want it more for entertainment than work, then HP is a good one.

be sure not to get Dell, there best performance is in server machines for business and desktops for personal use and you pay a lot for the name now and avoid emachines. Look into Toshiba and Acer they are the most prominant and successful laptop brands out right now.
FOR SAVING MONEY I recommend CompaQ, they are not the fastest, but the best for the money, upgradeable, and there merging with Hewlitt Packard hase made them much more Customer service oriented so you can get the best support and services after purchases.

I recommend IBM thinkpads prior to the lenovo take-over.

Now a days...Id grab an HP

I have a 1yr old Compaq I am very happy with it and my friend has a Dell and swears that it is the best.
