it's called a range clock.....in the days before radar controlled gunnery, ships would use optical controlled range finders ( more on that if you'd like) to establish the distance to the target....they would then move the indicator dial on the range clock so that other ships could see what range they were firing at.........usefull if your ship couldn't see the target directly because of smoke, other ships in the way, damage to your gear, etc......

it sounds crude but battleships and cruisers could hit a 600 x 100 foot target at 75,000 foot range repeatedly

and flux capacitors only kick in at Warp 1 or better......

I believe it was the flux capacitor. If that ship gets up to 88 mph... Sorry, feeling silly today. :)
