I have been in this business for long now,so i guess i should let u know my point of view.It is said and believed that all free antivirus programs have some or the other limitation;some say, they deliberately leave loopholes so that they are not 100% fool-proof.I have experimented with many free antiviruses, mostly all of them, and have found that my system got infected with trojans and other mailicious viruses, even wen i had those a/v updated and running.Since the day I have switched over to a paid anti-virus software,my troubles have vanished.Did I make my point clear?

I 3rd that AVG for a FREE download.
Check out 'EWIDO' it's free and I've found pretty good.
I've got NORTON but it scans the system on start up making it very slow. Things can slip through.
Remember there's no such thing as a free lunch...or download.
You will never get a totally great anti-virus software.
Without viruses there would be no Anti-Virus programmes. We are talking millions $$$$$ here.
There's always a cop-out clause in these type of programmes to stop companies suing their a*sses.
I rest my case...

AVG is fine but there are alternatives that are also free like Avira and Avast. They all have the advantages and disadvantages but you should only have one Anti Virus programme on your computer at any one time. I wouldn't want to recommend any particular one of these programmes as it depends on the individual circumstances as to which is best for you. I have put a link below to an extensive article that gives great on free anti virus, anti spyware/adware and firewall software. The article is a bit long but it is well worth reading as you will be much better informed to look after your computer once you have read it AJ

Download Avast Anti-Virus (http://www.download-avast.com ) coupled with Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com ) for free. This will protect you against viruses and hackers - this free combination was advised by Channel 5's The Gadget Show (UK). This will always be free but you can pay for Zone Alarm Pro and upgraded versions of Avast.
You could, alternatively, get Norton Anti-Virus free for 6 months on GooglePack (http://pack.google.com/intl/en/product_info.html?symantec).
If you want to be extra-safe download Norton and pay for it after the 6 months run out. Norton is reputed to be the safest protection there is.

ive just started using AntiVir which you can download for free and its great.
I was using norton and its slow, oh so very bloody slow and after asking on this site about it was told by everyone to get rid of it.
Spybot is also good for spyware as well and again is fast and almost daily updated.
happy virus hunting.

Buy something good from McAfee or Norton. All the free stuff is usually just spyware anyway so when you download it you have more problems than without it it. If it's free don't trust it.

i entirely second that motion. AVG is great, and completely free.
As a tangent, spybot search and destroy is a really nice antispyware.
