The economy looks "great" because the rich are getting richer. Meanwhile, the poor are getting poorer, more middle class are finding themselves on the lower half of the scale. Energy prices are through the roof, housing prices are through the roof, medical prices are through the roof... but incomes are stagnant, even while dual-earner households are now the norm, not the exception.
The "great"ness of the economy is kind of an ironic statement considering we just recently caught up to where we were before 2000. So it's great, if it's still 1999, which it isn't.
The economy looks "great" because if you take the wealth of everyone in the country and divide by the number of people, it comes out high. In reality though, 90% of that wealth is only owned by 10% of the people. So the remaining 90% of the people have to share the leftover 10% of wealth. If the rich people double their wealth, the GDP goes up, but the rest of the people don't benefit at all.
So yeah. Look at the nice big numbers, convince yourself this is good, don't bother looking at the average person's finances. Thirty years ago the average person spent 5% of their income on housing; today the average person spends more like 30% of their income on housing. You find this in a lot of household expenses. Meanwhile, people are saving less and in more debt. Instead of pensions (heh, that would require job security) and social security, we have to gamble on 401Ks in order to have anything for our future after retirement.
In short... whatever, dude.

Really? The place where I work recently laid off an entire shift. When can I look forward to the bounty our republican masters to trickle down onto my sweat laden brow? Or is this wonderful economy only helping the rich @ssholes like the guy who owns the factory where I work?

what's so wonderful? living costs are going up far faster than salaries. the poor are getting poorer. more people who work in traditionally self-supporting jobs are finding themselves in the working poor.
