An Inconvenient Truth: March has been much colder and rainier in San Francisco the last couple of years than normal. Last year, it poured... I ruined three pairs of good shoes, threw away four destroyed umbrellas, and we were building an ark. Always best in San Francisco to dress in layers and be prepared for a variety of weather. A warm waterproof long coat with a hood and good sturdy waterproof boots would be very wise. Gloves and warm scarves, too. It won't be sub-zero, but it may get down into the high 30's - low 40's at night, which is extreme for us.

San Francisco weather tends to be fairly moderate all year long--according to wikipedia the average March high is 62.5F (16.7C) and the average low is 49.2F (9.6C). March does fall into the rainy season (if you come in summer there's almost no chance you'll get any rain) but its not like the Bay Area gets solid rain for three months--you might get a storm or you might not, and the weather can be absolutely beautiful at any point during the year. On the bright side the state is also at its greenest in earlier spring, and this IMHO makes it more attractive than during the summer (when a lot of the grasses brown out). Basically bring a jacket and cross your fingers; the city has plenty to do indoors in if the weather turns less than perfect for a day or two.

March, April and May are some of the most inviting months to visit San Francisco. Characteristically cloudless and mild, some of the warmest and driest days of the year occur in San Francisco's spring months, making San Francisco's springtime noticeably free from the spring showers that moisten other parts of the United States.
Records and Averages
March 61.0° F 47.0° F
April 64.0° F 48.0° F

The average temperature in March is 47 low and 61 high (BTW I've always found www.weather.com helpful). However SFO can get really windy, so dress warm--bring at least a sweater and a jacket. In the bay area, the rule-of-thumb is always to dress in layers, even in summer. You'll need an umbrella too. March is still raining season and in the worst case of this year, it almost rained everyday.

I lived in San Francisco for a year, and I can tell you that when I was there, in March, it rained...rained sideways, upside down and backwards. The wind from the bay blows in and the rain goes every which way.
Take your raincoat, don't take an umbrella, it will get wrecked in seconds flat. BUT, by all means go to SF...you will NOT regret it!
Have fun and give my love to all!

Foggy and cool, maybe a little light rain. But the fog usually burns off by noon. So bring layers, and an umbrella just in case.
But it's totally beautiful no matter what the weather!

The weather here is pretty unpredictable.. and it really depends on what district you end up going to. It could start off as a sunny day and then by mi-afternoon..the og could start rolling in. Dress in layers :) and always always have a jacket on you...

Even in the summer it is always very windy and can be cold. My first time there I made the mistake of not bringing a jacket, and regretted it. Be sure to bring a jacket!
