You need to have either a legal copy of a ghosting software (the industry standard is Symantec's Ghost), of which you create a .gho file of an identical machine, boot into dos from the boot disk you create and then apply the .gho "image" to the disk (from either an external hard drive, DVD, Cd's or network, depending on how you stored the image).
OR
You purchase a legal copy of media *CD* (or use a legal copy, providing you have either the manufacturers disk you received when you purchased the computer or purchased an upgrade and received the media with that purchase). Insert the disk into the CD-ROM and reboot the computer.
When the prompts come up at the first splash screen (typically within 3-5 seconds of booting up), strike the F12 (in some cases the F8) key. A dos menu will come up and ask where you'd like to boot from. You want to select the CD drive, hit return and then hit any key on the keyboard when the prompt reads on the screen "strike any key to boot from CD".
Alternatively, at the first boot, you can select F2 to go into the BIOS. Go to the boot drive configuration and unselect all but the CD rom drive. Also be sure that the CD drive is in fact selected. hit esc, then make sure you "exit saving changes".
The windows PE will load drivers automatically (PE is pre-installation environment). It will ask you to select a drive to install to. You should be sure to format the hard drive using NTFS format (not the quick option), and then Microsoft will handle the rest.

Assuming you have aldready formatted your hard disk, switch the power on and open the cd/ dvd drive(the eject button).
Put the Windows install/boot disk (you need to have this, bought or by other means) in the cd/dvd drive.
Close the drive and reboot(restart) the computer/laptop.
The screens that follow are pretty self-explanatory.
Make partions- i suggest u make at least 2.
If you are unsure of any option, leave it be. Windows takes care of itself.
If you are asking this about Vista, i don't know cause i haven't tried it out yet, but the steps for installing it should remain the same as they are same for all OSs(Operating Systems) i have tried.
By the way i suggest Linux-any flavour (version)-it's free!

Change your boot-up device to your CD-ROM by going into your BIOS. Reboot with your Windows disc in and it will bring up the Windows Setup wizard.
