The Republicans want to stay the course, meaning that they wish to finish what they have started. They obviously have something in mind in terms of a conclusion to this war. What that is, I don't know. The Democrats can say what they want, claim whatever they want, but I guarantee that we will not be pulling out of Iraq if the powers shift to Democrat majority. The republicans do not plan on pulling out, and the Democrats are just saying what we want to hear. The US hasn't even started the massive bombing that they are so well known for. We've got a few more years. This war will continue. So to answer your question, there is no difference. Republican, Democrat, 2 sides of the same coin. Peace!

The following are just guesses:
I'm guessing that Republicans in office see "stay the course" as meaning keep fighting until the Iraqis are ready to take over. No need to change tactics since doing so would be admission of a mistake somewhere along the line, something this administration avoids as often as possible.
I'm guessing that Democrats in office see "stay the course" as meaning keep U.S. troops in Iraq indefinitely, giving the Iraqis no incentive to get their own forces or democratic institutions in self-sufficient shape since they can indefinitely spend U.S. dollars and risk U.S. lives instead of their own. If there was a timetable for withdrawal (even a flexible one that allows for changes and contingencies), I'm betting we'd be seeing more progress by the Iraqis towards becoming self-sufficient since a real incentive to get their act together would be in place.

stay the course comes across as saying we won't change tactics and we will keep troops there till everything has settled down, no exceptions.. that's why he stopped using that term... it came across so rigid.. the democrats want to get out as quickly as possible .. possibly phasing out.. i can't say that it will work better than bush's plan.. but it surely can't be any worse.

Doing the same thing over and over and failing over and over, but still "believing" they will succeed versus smart tactics that will succeed and defining goal that is attainable.

I personally think it's time for "hit n run" as opposed to "cut n run."
