fertility clinics to collect, freeze and later destroy hundreds of thousands of embyos? Why aren't these clinics outlawed or prevented from making excess "babies" that are frozen.

You are correct - it seems logically inconsistent. It is!

But many people DO object to the practice you describe, and many people who were not aware of these practices have turned against fertility clinics as well.

It's not inconceivable that the embryonic stem cell debate will result in a "step back" for fertility clinics as well.

PS I SWEAR I didn't see the pun in using the word "inconceivable" before I began typing it! :)

PPS The current bills involve federal funding for stem cell research, not making it illegal. Another logical inconsistency, perhaps. If it's wrong, why is it legal at all? Abortion is also legal but there are severe restrictions on federal funding - probably only when mother's life is in danger.

A compromise? Logic and politics don't always mix. The US Constitution, when first adopted, said the slave trade would be illegal 25 years after its adoption. If it was bad, why not end it immediately, as well as slavery itself? Because people took one step, and took what they could get. Illogical, but better than nothing.

The real science say this; It all begins with the five to seven days after conception. This is the time period during which embryonic stem cells can be harvested. Most on the right believe that life begins at the moment of conception. So many believe that to kill the cytoblast (the term for the embryo at this particular stage) is amoral and should not be done. i.e. It is murder.
When a couple decides they no longer want any more invitro procedures done, the companies that do the procedures are under the obligation to destroy the remaining supply of cytoblasts, the very same cytoblasts that could otherwise be used for stem cell research.
The Rapture Right's logic on this subject leads me to believe that it is better to throw life in a garbage can than to use it for research and possible cures to diseases.
The embryos are frozen, they have 150 cells, they aren't even embryos, they are cytoblasts. They already exist and the Rapture Right would rather put them in the trash than in a laboratory.

I'm delighted. I think stem cell research has the largest potential for real break-throughs in dozens of important areas, and the idea that it is better to throw away unwanted embryos rather than use them is hypocritical in the extreme.

You are absolutely right. Fertility clinics (a big $$ business, by the way) create thousands upon thousands of human embryos that are frozen in limbo for years. Where's the outrage over that?

Because pro-lifers use these clinics when they can't conceive. Instead of adopting a child like they urged everybody else to do, they prefer to waste money to obtain a child with their blood. If they really thought that these embryos are babies then they would have bombed fertility clinics like they bombed abortion clinics in the 80s. It shows hypocrisy at its finest level.

The Republicans are not opposed to stem cell research. They are opposed to the government funding Embryonic stem cell research, which by the way has been a bust and has produced NO results. The Funded NON embryonic research has actually resulted in some cures. Please try and get your fact straights.

They are once again, talking out of both sides of their mouths. These embryos are created, then destroyed. Why not use them for research since they will be destroyed anyway? Are the American people really this dense?

Um, where are these "hundreds of thousands of embryos" being destroyed? What are you talking about?

Republicans are against **FEDERAL FUNDING FOR NEW LINES OF EMBRYONIC STEM CELLS**. They are NOT against other forms of stem cell research like ADULT stem cell research.
