uk dvd's vs. us dvd's?

I have a friend in the uk and i live in the us. I am curious if the dvd's and vhs tapes that are in the uk would work on our systems here in the us.

ask him for the region. if its region 1 ur supposed to be able to play it. most dvd players are multi region so the probability is that it would work

The US is Region 1. Usually the UK is region 2. Anything that isn't region 1 will not work, unless you have a multi-region player. They play anything.
