Because in order to get a shock, there needs to be a complete circuit i.e. there needs to be contact with the ground - as the bird in on the pylon but not making contact with the ground, the circuit is incomplete and the bird doesn't get a shock.

In order to get a shock ,you need to be in contact with earth ,

So the birds are hopping along the wire no problem at all !!

however, where you to put a metal ladder ,to the live wire and make contact with the ladder, just one hand !!
you would surely be electrocuted

and should, that little bird, unfortunately
hop on the wire at the very same time,
he would be 'fried' as well .

I put my bird on an electric pylon and she definately got shock.

As others have said, because it is not a complete circuit. Electricity is a flow of energy, and it will flow through the lowest resistance path. The path through wire between the bird's feet is a much lower resistance than the path up one leg of the bird and down the other.

because there needs to be an electric potential DIFFERENCE in order to have a current. If both feet are on the wire, they are at the same potential. One foot has to be on the wire and the other foot has to touch something that is grounded (in electrical contact with the earth).

Does this mean that if I hang on to the wire with no earthing ? I would be fine ?

They always sit on top wire therefore not creating a circuit. In days gone past workers could sit in cradle on wire and go along it when it was on, same reason.
Birds do get fried though as they can go to close to pylon and 11kv, 33kv or national grid voltage of 275kv and 400kv can arc in right conditions. Fried crow anyone?

unlike humans, Birds are not Earthed, so they don't get shocks when they sit on pylons, electric cables, ect, ect

because they need to create a current having one leg on one of the 3 wires and having its other leg on another of the 3 pylons ( so each leg on different wires ) and they would..but they are too small..so yeah :)

Because they aren't completing the circuit - they would need to be touching the ground at the same time as the wire to get a shock
