My interpretation is when an artist goes from a more independent, punk-rockish sort of stance, to selling Dell computers or VW cars, especailly if the artist has made a career of being Mr./Ms. "Independent I hate corporate America". Whenever they switch over to doing something sritctly to makle a buck, that is selling out.
Of course, many people say an artist has sold out once they start making money or become famous. I call that success. If they become successful doing what they beleive in and have always done, then good for them. I don't call that selling out.

It's when you compromise your integrity or change your art style just to make some extra money. Eventually everyone is accussed of doing it often when they're not.

Moby was accussed of doing it when he started getting popular but the whole electronic music genre was getting popular.

Metallica was accussed of doing it when they made their first official video but eventually they'd have to do one.

Iron Maiden was accussed of doing it when they switched to synth guitars but that didn't last.

Eventually a band with a small following will eventually have a hit and it's usually unintentional. They didn't really sell out they just had a fluke or because of the new attention from the mainstream they attract more fans who never heard of them and actually do like their sound.

Selling out is a common slang phrase. Broadly speaking, it refers to the compromising of one's integrity in exchange for money or other personal gain. It is commonly associated with attempts to increase mass appeal or acceptability to mainstream society. A person who does this is labelled a sellout.

Indeed. Normally it means that a band went so far in a style change and got a load of new fans and let down all their old ones.

selling out is what my chemical romance did.

it means changing the sound of your music, and your style, in order to appeal to a broader range of people. my chemical romance used to be hard, raw, explosive, emotional.

now, they've watered down their music, added poppy rifts and predictable hooks, changed their style to be more radio and mtv friendly.

THAT is selling out. changing your style and sound for more money.
