My 17 month old son has been off the bottle since 12 mo. He was using the Nuby sippy cups with a silicone spout. Now he uses a straw cup during the day and his pre-bed milk is given in the Nuby. His Dr. told me that he *should* be drinking out of a regular hard spout sippy...but my son refuses it!
Any suggestions about how I can get him to take the hard spout sippy? Or is it really that important? He can drink out of a straw, and a regular cup if I hold it for him- but he won't tip a regular sippy cup himself!

I would just give him the hard tippy and he will eventually get thirsty enough to use it. He's just being stubborn and knows he can get what he wants... good luck to you.

My little girl will not drink out of the hard spout sippy cup and she is coming up on 2 1/2. The only down side I have seen is that she will chew on the Silicone and I have to buy more sippies more often because they start leaking. Plus I feel as if I can get the Nuby's cleaner when washing them because they are pliable and I can really get the nip bush in the tight spots.

I dont think its that important. My daughter just turned 1 and she uses that same Nuby silicone cup. They probably wants him to use the hard spout one beause it could be better for his teeth. I have no clue really I never heard of that before.
But give him want he wants and aslong as it not a bottle! =D

your doctor doesn't know anything.......
getting them OFF the bottle is the hard part.....and sooner or later they will learn to tip the cup upwards....my dauther just recently started doing it when I tell her UP. UP.....so she would tip the cup up when I said that........

This is what I did.........and my daughter still drinks out of the straw cups....she's almost 2

Slowly and gradually.....it's all about TRANSITION.

I weaned my daughter at 11months also.......and she was completely off by the time she turned one.....but I couldn't get her off the night time feeding.....until about 13 months......

She did not take the bottle at all......tried 3 different kinds.......and gave up.....
and for awhile she didn't drink the milk either.......so I would give her water and she drank that......
I just had to keep trying to give her a little at a time....even if it was just a sip here and there......
and I wasn't too worried because she was eating solid food by then....and taking her vitamins.....and she did drink water and was peeing and pooing.......
so I just coaxed her along as best as I could.

Then someone told me that breastfed babies can drink from a straw faster than bottle fed babies......
so I got the rubbermaid drink box.

And they were right......and I could squeeze the bottle to get her to drink more milk when she's just sipping it.......

My daughter is turning two next month and she still drinks from these bottles as well as the first year cups.....
and now also has Little Mermaid cups with the same idea.....

(If you are pumping your milk........then you can put (for example) 4 0z of breastmilk with one ounce of cow's milk....and then slowly decrease breastmilk and increase cow's milk so she can get used to the taste slowly)

And make sure it's WHOLE/HOMOGENIZED Milk....not 2%.....until around 2 years of age......they still need the fat from the milk for their development.

ALSO.........one last thing.......if she's been breastfeeding....
then she's accustomed to more or less room temperature milk...
so if you're going to give her the cow's milk...don't make it warm....just room temperature.....like 10-15 seconds in the microwave.......
that saves you alot in the long run if they get used to room temperature stuff and she will drink cold milk sooner rather than later.........

you shouldn't even be holding the cup for him, he should be able to do it himself by this age! I wouldn't see how using the silicone spouts pose a problem, and my son used them and now is on the hard spouts, he didn't like them at first but eventually when he got thirsty he took them.

I honestly don't think it really matters, it great he is exclusivly drinking from a sippy cup.

Give him one with a hard spout. He'll refuse it at first, but he'll later realize how thirsty he is and he'll give into it.
