No. We don't actually have a comprehensive 'system,' everybody does it differently, and there is no reliable oversight. But, we all need to vote! The only way changes will happen is if we demand them!

Ask for a paper ballot at your polling place; you can fill out a form to cast your votes instead of using a machine. Take a picture of it with your camera or cell phone after you've filled it out. If they tell you they've run out of paper ballots and you have to use a machine, take pictures of the screens as you register your selections. If any questions about the votes in your area come up, then you have a record of how you voted. If enough people do this, we can keep our elections honest.

Generally, yes, although an appalling number of errors occur. It's estimated that about 1% of Americans couldn't follow the voting instructions in 1996, and 2000. I don't have figures for 2004.

A cynical person might say that these people should NOT vote.

Which one?

The collegic system that allows a president to be elected despite the fact that they did not win popular vote?

The system that keeps career politicians in office, and leaves little room for non-like-minded career politicians who basically work for big business?

Or the new electronic voting systems that have major security holes and is run by the owner of Diebold who is one of those wealthy big business owners and a staunch Republican who has commented with no uncertain terms that he will do *anything* to ensure that Republicans stay in power.

Lately I haven't had much trust in any of our systems, Our govmt. is corrupt, the police is corrupt, the judicial system is corrupt. I's a power game between the big boys. Face it the judicial system is about the next to be big attorney who can find a loop in the system, it's not about justice or doing the right thing. Those in power and with money can twist just about anhything. No one cares about standing up to do the right thing anymore! And our world is hurting for it!
