I was told it is supposed to sharpen the blades. Well, my sis put a small round ham bone down hers and all it did was jam the motor and lock it up.

Never use bones, to sharpen Garbage disposal blades use Cubed ice, if you jam one up theres an allen fitting in the bottom of the disposal unit turn it counter clockwise and try it again, you may need to repeat this several times to break or dislodge whatever is jamming it up

It may sharpen the blades, but it also causes a lot of stuff to go downt the drain that can easily clog it up. (Also, as folks have said, never use a ham bone!). You're much better off using ice cubes to sharpen the blades- at leat the chips from it just melt away.

I have never heard of using bones. However, you can and should use ice cubes. They will help keep the blades sharp. As a bonus, they will also get any food out that may be stuck in the edges!

Normally, you'll never need to sharpen those blades; they have a specific design to serve their purpose. If it seems they need sharpening then someone has placed inappropriate items inside or it is just to darn old. Nothing you place inside is capable of sharpening these blades properly. Have someone take it apart and replace them or replace the unit itself. There is no user fixit for these blades

Keep the bones out of the disposer. Put in orange peels. It will make the kitchen smell like an orange grove.

NO ! I think you should try egg shells. Maybe a small chicken bone but not a great idea. Are you sure your blades are dull ? Good luck.
