my friend lives in apartments and does not have a lock on his wireless network so that his gf two doors down can use it too..... i tell him that he NEEDS to put one on because people can steal his connection and he will be held responsible for anything that they do. am i right??

if somebody was illegally logging onto his network and downloading music or doing whatever else illegal all law would see is HIS IP Adress and he would be fully responsible correct?

Yes, you are right. By not securing his connection anyone can steal it, so it's not a good idea at all. Not only could he be blamed for their illegal activity, they could be tracking his activity of the internet. Making his SSID invisible will prevent neighbors from stumbling across his connection but anyone looking for it will be able to connect unless he protects it. A lot of people seem to think it's too much trouble to protect their connection. Right now, if I wanted to, I could connect to 5 out of 7 of my neighbor's wireless connections because they are not password protected. Another problem with allowing the neighbors to use it is that lots of traffic will slow it down.

Yes that is true he could be held responsible...but it is also very easy to find how many locations and users have been going through his ip address, but this could cause major problems for your friend. He could get the internet connection routed so only him and his girlfriend can use it. Okay yes you can pinpoint the location of the user, but it is difficult if more than one user is on the computer.

You are correct...he should definitely put a WEP key on his router. Just tell him to tell his girlfriend the key so she can connect...that way nobody else can except them (unless somebody knows how to hack in).
