Where are you? There are dealers who specialise in these cars.

In the UK check out http://www.911virgin.com/stock.htm

They only have more modern cars in stock at the moment, but they'll be able to point you in the right direction.

Finding one shouldn't be a problem. As for how much to pay - all depends on condition. Go pick up a copy of 'Excellence' magazine that has a price guide in it. (also has classifieds...) For those years you'd be looking at either a 2.4 or 2.7. Pre 75-76, the cars were NOT galvinized like they were afterwards and were quite prone to rust ! Neither engine was overly stellar, so combined with rust issue - I'd REALLY recommend a new car. ( I had a 76 911S w/2.7 and 87 924 and was also memeber of PCA)

Good luck in your search. If you've never driven a Porsche, they are GREAT !

I find that most older cars sold in the state of California usually are in pretty good shape. I would'nt pay any more than say 10 thousand. Depending on the model. I would stay away from the 911T...although a fun car to drive, the triple Weber carberators are a SOB to keep syncted. The Targa,or the SC are fine cars, and easier to maintain.

I found my 1985 targa carrera on ebay motors.

Believe it or not!! I had my mechanic check it out first, it has been a dream. I at least reccomend it to look around and get a ball park price of what they go for. You can even look at auctions that ended and see the final price.
