If you can only visit one city in Texas, go to Muleshoe. Muleshoe is the county seat of Bailey County, Texas, and is the home of the National Mule Museum and the World's Largest Muleshoe (22 feet high and 17 feet wide) at the Muleshoe Heritage Center.

I'd choose Austin. If you stay pretty close to downtown, you can get around OK on foot and by public transportation (the "Dillo" bus). It's a pretty city; there's lots of green space, including the Hike and Bike Trail by the lake, right next to downtown. Don't know what your budget is, but if you stay at the Radisson on Cesar Chavez, you'll be right on the lake. Oh, and you can watch the famous huge flock of Mexican freetail bats, for which Austin is famous, fly out from the Congress Avenue Bridge in the evening. It's got to be the only Radisson that's famous for bat-watching. Alternatively you could stay at the San Jose, on South Congress, or I think the Austin Motel on South Congress has gotten all fixed up too. I don't know what you're shopping for, but there's some pretty good shopping on South Congress, or over on Lamar. There's a little area with boutiques that's recently gotten all fixed up around Second Street which is downtown. Plenty of good restaurants around the downtown area, too, and plenty of entertainment.
For a more strange experience (in which you'd have to rent a car and no public transportation would be available) I'd consider Marfa, which is out in the middle of nowhere, West Texas and has suddenly gotten way hip. I mean WAAAY hip. It has become an arts destination for rich hip people from NYC. So you have this little ol' West Texas town in the middle of nowhere - I think it's flat plains nowhere that may have mountains in the distance -- that's, like, mutated. I bet it's expensive but it would be an experience. I'm really curious and want to go. I mean, I am from Texas but I have not been through Marfa since my 8th grade field trip to Big Bend National Park a few decades ago -- and there was nothing there when I was in 8th grade....I guess you could go to Marfa and to Big Bend. Big Bend has spectacular scenery.

AUSTIN. I live in Houston...but Austin is definitely the most beautiful city Texas has. The scenery is great and there is alot to do. San Antonio isn't that great in my opinion....it has the riverwalk but the city itself is ugly. Austin has natural beauty everywhere and great spots to visit.

I really like San Antonio. There's quite a bit to do.
However, Austin is gorgeous and has a ton of live music. It just depends on what you like.
