I am about 6 weeks preg, and will be quitting my job in a few weeks. My job is the type where you need to travel, and work overtime and I don't want to send my child to daycare, so I made the choice to be a stay at home mom, since my husband's job can support it. Everyone at work is very career oriented and pretty much single and childless or with grown up children, and they don't have a high opinion of anyone getting preg young. I am in my early twenties, and co-workers have mentioned comments before about "not ruining my life and getting knocked up" . I am good friends with most of my co-workers, but don't think it's anyone's business as to whether I have children or not. Should I tell them that I'm preggo, or just quit with some other reason (going back to school, etc). I will prob. keep contact with some people even after quitting, as we're good friends, and may end up telling them later on, but what to do know? My husband says just say your preggo, what can they do about it.

I am quitting sooner because I've been feeling really sick, and I can't really do my job as well as before. I've also been looking into consulting/working from home as someone suggested.

I would tell them the truth, that you and hubby decided now was the perfect time to have a baby and how excited you are that you will be in his or her life so much. Be honest, don't worry about what they think, soon you will have a little man or little gal that will think the world of you for being with them and not with your job.

Congratulations!!! And good job on the decision! Being a stay-at-home-mom rocks.

Your so early in your Pregnancy, Unless your doctor tells you to quit. You should consider keeping your job for a while, And pardon my french but screw your co-workers just because they feel like that if they cant understand that this is a choice that your making then there not worth talking to any ways, Enjoy the traveling and mingling with other adults while you can. This being your first child ENJOY the childless freedom. I worked until I was 8 1/2 months and 9 months. And now I'm glad I did because you don't understand the value of adult time until you don't have it any more.

This is a personal issue as its up to you if you want to tell them or not as its person reasons, but if you want to maybe use them as a good reference for latter in the future or even go back to the job after a few years then maybe you should. Your husband is right as there is nothing they can do about you deciding to be a full time mum, its your life so your decision and the reason your leaving so early in your pregnancy is because you don't feel your up for the job so you are thinking about the business as well, as you want to do the best while working, and you already feel as you can't, so that's why your leaving.

Good luck and I hope everything turns out well.

I'm in the same situation... Kind of, my daughter is actually 6.5 mos old. But my career is interfering. I was 21 when I had her. But if you're married, and now having a family, you've got your priorities straight. Honey, let them look down on you, if you believe in God, trust that he is pleased with you. There are so many young ones commiting crimes and doing drugs and getting "knocked up". I believe that it is in direct correlation with lack of parental attention. Not meaning you should micromanage, but if you're there to be a constant example, You know that you've done your part to raise a good kid and in turn, help save this morally lacking society we live in.
Congrats on your baby, and don't let any one talk down to you.
Let them know why you're quitting, that will show them how much you think of being a stay at home mom. Maybe a co-worker feels like you and hasn't gotten the guts to do it.
Good luck, luv.

Tell them your pregnant, I'd work as long as I could and then go on permanent leave, when the time is right simply say I'm really going to miss all of you but my baby is the most important thing in my life, and I have the chance to be a stay at home Mom and I'm going to do just that.

I was in the same boat....I was an advertising agent and I told my boss that I was preggo and he took it fine, but I told him that I didn't think I could do all the work I had been doing because of the pregnancy and he was okay with it. But as far as people looking down on you at your job screw them you are married and are fixxing to have a wonderful blessing.!!! .....PS It is always good to tell your boss something like that in case you pass out or something happens and you have to go to the hospital they need to know......

I don't think you should say anything about the pregnancy directly to your boss. I agree, it's none of anybody else's business about you having kids, so they don't need to know anything. I also wouldn't lie to anybody if they ask, just say you are going to take some time off to explore other career paths. Don't burn bridges, you may want to go back to work in a few years and will need good references. Remember, parenting is a full time job too! Congrats and good luck!

i agree with you - just submit resignation based on returning to school or even writing a book or doing research. not because of what you think of their opinion, but because you don't want to discuss how much children need their moms. unless you'd like to have such a conversation. (i know i would :) since i believed stay-home-mom was wrong for women and babies, and since i learned differently, i figure other people are ignorant of the facts, too.

anyway, another reason to give 'professional' sounding reasons is to keep your options open for consulting or freelance work. if you see those people in your personal life, tho, just tell them.

You could say that this job is not what you want at this time but you appreciate the opportunity and maybe you'll have the chance to work with them in the future. I don't think its necessary that you give a specific reason, unless your boss asks you. But again, you don't have to say if you don't want to. Like you said, its none of their business.
