Although the suburbs are as mall crazy as the rest of America (Concord's Sun Valley Mall, Richmond's Hilltop Mall, and San Jose's Santana Row are just some of the many mall-clones scattered about)... there are some less corporate options in the urban core.

Locals tend to congregate in the follow areas:

9th Avenue near Golden Gate Park.

Around the University of California campus in Berkeley.

Valencia/Mission between 16th and 24th Streets.

Hayes and Octavia Streets.

Church and 24th Streets.

11th Street in SOMA.

Oakland Chinatown (not the larger, touristy one in Downtown San Francisco) and Jack London Square.

There's an excellent place for dim sum on Geary. I can't tell you the name of it anymore. But it's within walking distance of the bay. You can see the water easily from the restaurant. It's a 2 story restaurant on the left if you're facing the water. Not terribly helpful, but people here could probably help, or the yellow pages.

Most of the locals go to Oakland or Berkley. There is a great Irish coffee bar near Cal State.

The Valencia corridor (Valencia Street between 16th and 24th) has some great restaurants, stores, and clubs. You're bound to see a colorful cross-section of the population.

You want to experience it as a local? There are so many good jokes, but if I say any I'll get reported. I guess just go to Fisherman's Wharf and Alcatraz Island.
